This system is an amazing multi-tasker, with its abilities for steaming, roasting, searing or braising. WMF Vitalis features high quality stainless steel that is extremely durable, easy to clean and super-hygenic. The Transtherm base and high sides ensure even heat distribution and retention. The built in thermometer in the clear glass lid allows for controlling the inside temperature without removing the lid, while the handles are heat resistant. The removable steaming rack serves as an insert for the pan, and provides the healthiest cooking system available as the contents cook above the water level, allowing the food to retain essential vitmains and minerals. Vegetables remain tender, poultry stays succulent, and fish does not fall apart or dry out. Also included are one large and one small steamer insert that fit side by side on top of the rack, with flexible, removable wire handles for lifting the inserts, keeping foods separated while cooking. Additional inserts are available as open stock. Unit has a 6-3/4 quart capacity.

Novel item

I just received the vitalis steamer. A few notes for potential buyers:- at a little over $160+, this price at Amazon is the lowest you will find for the large size (there is a smaller version that is suitable for 2 people)- the unit is hefty and appears to be made of quality steel- the unit is NOT made in Germany as the description says; instead it is made in China which is disappointing especially in light of the price they are charging- the steel is dull looking (I have noticed that Rosle and WMF items made in China appear like this; whereas Fissler which is still made in Germany is beyond compare)- the inside is not as big as expected for 4 people, maybe 2 or 3 if you want to fit food in there comfortably- there are 2 trays provided - a large one and a small one. The steamer can hold 2 of the small trays and 1 of the large trays, or 2 large trays. It's no surprise that WMF sells the small and large trays individually for over $30+ each! I can tell you that based on the quality and price of the trays, they are not worth buying- the great thing about this is that the steamer is rectangular; not round as most steamers are. You have more room to play with the types of food you can steam- there is also an instructional booklet included which gives you tips on "broths" you can make to steam food withOverall, this is a good product, if a tad over-priced.

Excellent large stovetop steamer

This steamer is, as another reviewer noted, made in China, but it is still heavy, high-quality stainless steel. I had been using a smaller round steamer to cook vegetables and to reheat leftovers, but this steamer's shape makes it easier to steam several items at once, and there is a small thermometer in the lid, so it's possible to steam food at a lower temperature as advised in some of the complex and strange recipes included in the booklet that comes with the steamer. Here's my favorite steam cooked item, a savory egg custard -- 2 eggs gently beaten, mixed with about 4 oz of vegetable or chicken broth, maybe with some salt, pepper, and chopped shallots, cooked about 20 or 25 minutes at 180 to 190 degrees F.It's really important to avoid having the pan empty on a burner, but I did this by accident; the scorched spots on the pan's surface have mostly gone after prolonged and gentle cleaning efforts. The steamer takes a lot of space on my stovetop, but I use it just about every day, and really love it.

Better than expected

I ordered this item after listening to someone rave about their steamer oven. Unwilling to go to that expense I researched on-line alternatives and decided to purchase this item. I have not been disappointed. Unlike the little steamer baskets that eventually get some rust this item is top grade stainless steel. Yes, it is large, but that allows more options. I tried it over two burners but that is not necessary. I keep it on low as the lid fits so tightly that very little if any steam is lost. The first time I steamed raw and thawed chicken breasts there was some sticking to the steamer tray but not so much one could not soak the tray a bit and wash off any remaining residue - only residue stuck, not chunks of meat. Anyway I now brush on some liquid lecithin and no more sticking no matter how lean the item being steamed. (Probably needed to have a lower temperature as the unit does heat up quickly.) Recently I took about 2 lbs. of frozen chicken breasts out of the package and into the steamer (still frozen solid); about 1/2 to 45 min. later the chicken breasts were done, moist and delicious. The advantage of steaming like this is that I just lay herb springs one on the tray and lay the meat or vegetables on top - what flavor! The resulting liquid in the bottom of the pan is delicious, too. I save it and steam grains in it, use it for soup or to just sip.Clean is a breeze: As the meal is cooling enough to eat, I wash the pan. By the time the pan is clean and dry the meal is just the right temperature to eat. You cannot go wrong with this item. Worth the cost.
