Sleek & well designed...

It was a sad day when my last slow cooker passed on to slow cooker heaven -- he suffered a crack in the insert and was missed. I searched for a while for a replacement, trying to find the features I had grown accustomed to, like a digital display, automatic programming to "warm" setting once finished cooking, and at least 5 quarts since I enjoy cooking (and having leftovers).The Calphalon 7-Quart Digital Slow Cooker was still very new on the market when I was scouring the web for reviews. One or two sites featured this slow cooker (people who were lucky to get one from Calphalon to review) and I saw their feedback was positive. Despite only seeing very few reviews, I felt with the strong Calphalon reputation and its modern design, this slow cooker would be a good fit -- after a few months of use, I can say it's been a joy to use, easy to clean and seems to heat up very quickly. I've heard newer slow cooker models tend to cook faster, which seems true with this model too.If you have a large family, or like having leftovers, the 7 quart capacity will be perfect. Make sure to check the dimensions to be sure you have enough countertop real estate for this slow cooker, as it's footprint is a bit larger than the usual 4-5 quart sized models available from other brands.For those on the fence about ordering such a large sized slow cooker, I can offer you a few major perks - 1) the insert easily holds a whole chicken, which is a breeze to make for a healthy meal that could serve a small family (or provide multiple meals for 1-2 people), 2) on the chicken subject, I often use this slow cooker to make homemade chicken broth (save the bones from that whole chicken) and you can easily freeze the broth if you don't plan to use in the next few days, 3) homemade chili, and lots of it.Update: 2 years of owning this beautiful slow cooker (because it should look nice too!)...still going strong.

Worth the extra $

I wanted a large crockpot/slow cooker. I did expect this to be larger, my fault on interpreting the size. It is a 7 quart and it will eat about 16# of roast; can't fault it there. (update, I managed to cram that much in there, but. It is a lot easier to cook 9-12# of roast in there. For much larger, suggest you purchase a larger one or look at a 'roaster')Very nice appearing, not too heavy, solid feeling and the liner is nice. Easy to use even without the instructions, very intuitive.For the name, I own some of the company's stainless and nonstick cookware, and been very pleased with the performance. I was surprised to find they made small appliances as well.For the extra $ I paid I am satisfied I got my $$$ worth. This is a good middle sized slow cooker.... I own from one quart warmers to 3 and 4.5 qt to now this one, I still want a very large industrial sized rectangular one (next purchase). My 4.5 quart round is good for some things, but I like to cook in bulk then freeze in smaller portions and reheat as needed. This will be the perfect size for baked beans,a couple cut up chickens, or a moderate (10-15# cryopac) roast or brisket; or for potlucks or club functions on my turn to provide food.It is easy to clean up (although I have issues with getting the crock into my sink, I am glad to have a high arc lots of clearance sink faucet) both crock and outside of the unit. I hope to get many years of use out of it.The crock insert is straight with rounded ends, not oval. It is not too deep and it's not shallow. A good depth to sink a good size roast or tuck a couple of chickens into it. You do have to be careful to get the lid fitting FLAT after filling to seal it.I was also pleased to have it 'amazon prime' and able to get it the next day as I had bought a roast expecting to get a big rectangular one in town and there weren't any; so this saved the day. Fill, set level of heat, set time, hit start, and let it do the work.The cord is a little short considering, not bad, and it IS a 3 prong. A lot of 'small counter appliances' are 2 prong so be aware of this. The cord does store nicely in the very bottom, though.(update... I have been using it heavily over the holidays for batchNfreeze cooking and holiday obligations to clubs and parties, and it is just being wonderful. If you are cooking whole turkeys and not turkey breasts or other parts, you may want an oval one. I did put a 10# turkey breast in and two thighs, after deboning the breast and thigh/drumstick parts, and it did a beautiful job of it. Note the deboning, to make things fit better. The lid must sit tight after the fill or it will not cook properly) The auto cycle runs 6 hours and it is usually enough to bring your food up to temp then finish the slow cook. Boston Butt Roast (deboned) and Pork Sirloin Roast (cryopack so 4-5 pieces totalling about 9-10#) cook perfectly in it. It truely has been worth the $ I paid for it (I had hesitated about the price).another update, some have wondered IF the insert can be used on stovetop or in oven separately. No it can not. It is not made for that. There is a brand out there that has one that can, I do not know what brand that is. Also I do not know of any other inserts available for this one. And those aftermarket 3-well inserts do not fit in this either. I did purchase a much larger roaster, those 3 wells are made for the big roasters.

Reliable, Durable and Convenient

I've owned this cooker for a year now. This cooker cooks things to perfection. Cord storage is convenient and makes it easy to store. I love the quick start setting as it cooks high the first two hours and then low another 4 cooking things to a delicious perfection. The 7QT makes it possible to cook extra large quantities at a time without sacrificing quality. It cleans up easy as well as looks good when left out on the counter with it's stainless steel/black finish. This will be the last slow cooker I buy.
