Know your size

Although I love this pressure cooker, I wish I had purchased a larger size. That is entirely my fault. Clearly I'm not going to make a huge soup in a 3.7 quart pot. Potential buyers should think about what it is that they expect to cook and how much, and then select an appropriate size. 3.7 quarts sounded big enough to me, but remember that the pressure cooker can only be filled half way for pressure cooking soups, grains, beans, and foods that expand, or 2/3 full for other foods.The pressure cooker comes with a recipe book, however all the recipes are for size 4 quart or larger pressure cookers (except the frying pan recipes).The instruction manual says it is NOT suitable for apple compote, cranberries, porridge (oat flakes), barley, peas, pasta, macaroni, rhubarb, or some cereals because those foods tend to foam and froth and could block the valve.Otherwise, this pressure cooker is great! I have no problems with it. It works wonderfully. I will happily use it to make my dried beans, brown rice, and veggies.Someday I may even buy a bigger one :)

Nothing beats Kuhn Rikon!

I don't know what I would do without my pressure cooker! and I know I would not buy any other kind but Kuhn Rikon. There is no way to be disappointed with this product unless you just don't know how to use it. We are vegetarian and live on a very healthy, grain, rich in legumes type of diet .. my kids love rice cereal, steal cut oats ..etc. and I just can't imagine making life easy without one of these .. instead of having to plan ahead or wait 45minutes to 2 hours for some dishes *(like barley and wild rice) it takes anywhere from 2 minutes to steam veggies and cook pasta, to 30 minutes max for the harder grains (without soaking!) I highly recommend this product ... it is an essential must have in every kitchen! just throw everything in (all those yummy grains, veggies, and even meat if you like, with a good broth) lock it and let it do its thing! :)

Unbelievable...!!!

This is my first pressure cooker and boy am I filled with joy!I don't know how I've lived without ever having one.As a starter, I picked this anniversary version for its size and price.I couldn't be happier. I cook often enough and usually use good quality pots and pans. As soon as I held this cooker in my hand, I could tell this was a high quality pot before functions as pressure cooker. As aforementioned, I'd never owned/used pressure cooker before so I couldn't really compare its quality with other brand, but the pot is VERY quiet, safe and high quality. I was skeptical about reduced cooking time as 20 minutes for brown rice and 7 minutes for risotto sounded just unreal and am glad to find out they were all true. Brown rice usually took more than 1 1/2 hour with rice cooker and didn't come out as good as cooked in pressure cooker and I am hooked to make variety of risotto and they all come out creamy and just al dente.I have to get a larger pot now and most likely, I will stick to Kuhn Rikon since they are one of a few (?) that reaches the highest 15 psi (I really wanted to try WMF and it doesn't seem to reach 15 psi although I do not if this is true).

Excellent pressure cooker

I owned a six quart Kuhn Rikon Duromatic for about a decade. It worked great the entire time. But I recently destroyed it by leaving it on the high setting on a electric stove top with no liquid in it. The heat was so intense it delaminated the aluminum wafer on the base. So I just bought the 8.5 quart model. I love being able to cook lots of veggies all at once, so the increased size over my previous one is much appreciated.The model I had for ten years worked flawlessly. It did require occasional maintenance about every five years when the spring pressure mechanism on the top gets a little sticky. I disassembled the spring mechanism and cleaned the shaft with 4/0 steel wool. A mild kitchen cleanser would have accomplished the same task. It was not difficult to do.I have no hesitation rating this current model right at the top of the pack. They have made improvements over the one I bought 10 years ago. The industrial design is prettier to look at and the lid can be put on more easily. But the mechanism for controlling pressure appears to be the same, and it is a tried and proved design.

Can't live without it

Thanks to this pressure cooker, and Lorna Sass's book Pressure Perfect, the staff at the drive through at McDonalds must be wondering what happened to me and my kids. I can have a great dinner ready in 20 minutes, even if everything's in the freezer. This pot has been a great size for cooking everything, and it still fits in the dishwasher. I wish I'd bought one years ago.

A great pressure cooker, except for the price

The Kuhn pressure cooker is definitely a top quality product, except for the steep price. The unit is quiet, without the hissing sound and it does a great job in cooking tough meats. The other issue that might be a disadvantage for some is that not all the parts are dish washer safe.

Love it

This cooker is super efficient, so I don't let things cook as long as recipe books advise. It's pretty easy to use and probably indestructible... it is solid, and heavy. I use it to make rice (with a flame tamer), and I also make beans frequently. If you're looking for a highly efficient pressure cooker, try this one.

Our Favorite Cookware

We have three Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers that we use almost every time we cook - this is the main cookware we use. It's fast, easy, and it saves energy because it takes less time to cook. And the food's great - I like eating at home better than any restaurant.

we had purchased the earlier model of Kuhn Rikon 3342 5-1/4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker which came with inside containers for cooking, but this one did not come with any containers. Does anyone else have the same problem? Was this model supposed to come with inside containers - steel ones for cooking?Thanks.

Excellent pressure cooker

I purchased 3 pressure cookers from Amazon. A 4 qt Fagor Futuro, Prestige stainless, and this Kuhn. I am not very pleased with the Fagor. It is the correct capacity, looks nice, built solid, but leaks steam around the handles so that it takes a long time to get a seal. The Prestige is very nice, seals tight, and comes up to pressure quickly. However, the handles looks and feel cheap, and you have to maintain your burner at higher temperatures as the cooker vents steam when it reaches high pressure. The Kuhn takes the best properties of the other two pressure cookers, and efficiently cooks your food. However, I have noticed it frequently drops pressure so you have to turn up the burner for a few minutes. It requires more attention to keep it at pressure by increasing and decreasing the burner settings. That is the only reason I took off a star. Otherwise it is the best pressure cooker that I have tried.

One beautiful cooker!

First of all, this PC is gorgeous to look at! It also is a very nice size for one or two people and for cooking all kinds of vegetables, small meals, etc.It is SO easy to use! I'd never used a stove top pressure cooker before and in less than five minutes I had all the information I needed to be able to cook on my range with ease and confidence.If you've used the old rocker-style cookers you'll love how completely quiet this unit is.I'm amazed at how easy it is to prepare quick meals that taste as good or better than those cooked the conventional ways.Edited to add: Since I purchased this cooker I have ordered THREE more Kuhn Rikons in different sizes.I have used this small cooker almost daily since its purchase and I don't know how I managed to cook for so long without it. The smaller size is fabulous for vegetables and smaller meals.I've cooked beets, carrots, chicken Marsala, Lentils, Red Beans and Rice and countless other dishes. Everything has been just wonderful. I love having the larger sizes for stocks and stews and soups as well but this one is my go-to cooker, it is a kitchen essential for me.

Best piece of cookware in my kitchen!

This Kuhn Rikon braiser pressure cooker is the best thing in my kitchen. I love it to pieces. I bought a larger P-cooker before this one, a very inexpensive one that, granted, does the job fine, but this Kuhn Rikon is perfection to me. It's beautiful to look at and it is easy to use. It works so quickly that once it comes up to pressure and is cooking along (silently, I might add, unlike the cheaper one with the jiggler on the top), I sit right next to it on my stool and watch it to be sure it doesn't go down in pressure (I cook on a glasstop electric stovetop). As soon as the little pressure button pops up and I can see the lines marked on it, I turn down the heat to low and pretty much leave it there for the duration. I have cooked beef stew in this - perfect for 2 people for 2 dinners, but this pan is so heavy and wonderful, I use it on the stovetop, with a plain glass cover, all the time just for making anything else. It's perfect size for a family of 2 like we are and we always have leftovers. I give this 5 stars but would give it 10 if I had the chance...

This can be your favorite cookware in your kitchen!

We tried so many pressure cookers over the years as Indian Cooking demands heavy use of pressure cooking for making lentil soups and curries. We even tried few models from India but none could last more than a few years. Either they have problems with safety valves, handles, or they would become loose too often that requires tightenening of handles. If they last well, they were too bulky and takes almost forever to open and close the lid. Most annoying of all, they all make crazy sound that scares both my kids.

Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers sure have expensive prices but once you see them and feel them, you will find every reason to agree that they are well worth the price. This particular 2 set model is so lovely that my wife decided to get rid of most of her cookware as they both compliment each other so well. They can be used for almost everything we cook for our daily needs. The lids are interchangeable. This makes it so convenient to pressure cook veggies and lentils and then continue to use it with glass lid to make the final curry without having to transfer the cooked veggies and lentils to another cookware to make the curry. You can cook meat much faster and tastier without having to marinate for long.

The small one is so convenient if you have small babies and would like to feed them fresh boiled veggies, rice, or lentils. It saves lot of cooking time and the cook book that comes with it is wonderful. It gives you so many nice and simple receipes for everyone.

Couple of our guests got so impressed with this that they bought it right away from Amazon.com without waiting to get an incredible deal for it in their Amazon.com GoldBox like I did.

Great Pressure Cookers! (Edited April 2010)

I purchased the Kuhn Rikon Duo Set recently because I had heard the 2nd generation pressure cookers are much safer and quieter than the older models. I have not been disappointed and am no longer afraid of pressure cooking! As a matter of fact, I have been so pleased with this set that I have been cooking with it at least 4 or 5 times a week. Our family is "back to two" again, and the pressure frypan is just perfect for a few pork chops, meatballs, or other small portions of meat. I love yams, but didn't serve them often because it takes about an hour and a half to cook them in a conventional oven. In my new pressure frypan, yams only take about 10 - 12 minutes, and they come out perfect every time with no "hard" spots. I have also used the pressure frypan for carrots and corn on the cob with excellent results. I am equally pleased with the 5L pressure cooker. The glass and pressure lids are interchangable between the 5L cooker and the 2L frypan, and the cookers are so quiet, you hardly know they are working.The 2 pressure settings, 10 and 15psi, are clearly indicated on the popup valve stem. The valve can also release the pressure quickly with just the touch of a button. Unlike the older models, these pressure cookers lose very little steam, so less water is needed and more vitamins are retained in the food.The beautiful, highly polished stainless steel is very easy to clean. I have never had to use anything other than a plastic scrubbie, and the pans always clean up quickly and easily. For stubborn stains, I use the plastic scrubbie and a non-abrasive cleanser such as Bar Keeper's Friend. To help keep the pressure cookers in good condition and avoid the possibility of burning or scorching, I never cook with high heat. I do use high heat to bring the cooker up to pressure quickly, but once the correct pressure is reached, I gradually lower the burner to the lowest possible setting I can that will still maintain pressure.Before using these pressure cookers the first time, it is a good idea to take them on a little "test run", using only water. That way, you can familiarize yourself with the new pressure cookers so that you will be more comfortable using them the first time. Test to see how long it takes to reach each pressure setting. Also, test to find the lowest temperature you can cook at and still maintain a constant pressure for the number of minutes your food will need to cook. I was glad I decided to do a test run before I used my new cookers the first time. After 4 or 5 attempts to bring the cookers up to pressure on my test run without success, I finally discovered that there is a little screw in the pressure lid that has to be tightened. Once I tightened that screw, the cookers came up to pressure immediately, and I have had no problems since. I would highly recommend the Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker duo set. But the 2L frypan is rather small. If there are more than 2 people in your family, or you have really hearty appetites, you would probably be happier with one of the larger pressure cookers.April 23, 2010It's hard to believe I've been cooking with these pressure cookers for about seven and a half years now. Just a note to let everyone know I love them as much, if not more than the first day I cooked with them. I highly recommend Kuhn Rikon. Their pressure cookers are pricey, but worth every penny. A good investment that will last a lifetime if properly cared for. And no, I don't work for or sell Kuhn Rikon. I just love to cook and appreciate great cookware!

Kuhn Rikon 4 Piece Duromatic Pressure Cooker

Excellent set, easy to use and will last beyond its ten year guarantee. I use the pressure frypan to cook macrobiotic rice or oatmeal. After 50 minutes of high pressure cooking, I get perfect brown rice or oatmeal(no sticking or burning). Once you know the stove setting required to maintain pressure, you can almost forget it. However, as with any cooking device, I monitor it periodically. The pressure pot and frypan have flat bottoms which makes food preparation and cleaning a breeze. The glass lid was a major selling point, as it enables conventional use of both pots.

My wife makes succulent turkey drumsticks in only eight minutes of cooking time.

None of the other brands, we previewed, appeared to be constructed as well as the Kuhn Rikon models.

Needless to say, our family considers this set a great value. More important,we use it almost daily.

She saw it on a cooking show that didn't advertise it or mention the manufacturer. After some research I was able to identify it as the above product and ordered it for her. She is usually extremely thrifty with kitchen appliances but she loves it and considers it well worth the price.

Great Product!

I really like this HotPan. I don't have to spent too much time in front of the stove and don't have to use a lot of electricity to cook the food. For a cooking dummy like me, the food comes out great every single time I use this pan.

Mercedes of Pressure Cookers

There's a good reason why the New York times reviewed this product and tagged it "The Mercedes of Pressure Cookers". This efficient piece of cookware is precision engineered and made in a modern Swiss factory where the best cookers have been made since the safe Durotherm was first developed here. On a visit to the factory we saw a clean, efficient facility which employs re-settled Tibetan refugees and uses robotics to shape these precision pots. The Duromatic factory adheres to high standards of European green manufacturing methods while producing a product as precision made as a Swiss watch.The proof is in the cooking. We love our Duromatics, and have several in our home. For one thing it is quiet compared to older versions of pressure cookers, and safer due to several safety-release valves. When we cook things like split pea soup and roasted chicken we get perfect results with much less energy, heat, and cooking time than any other method of cookery. Once you cook artichokes this way you will never go back to your old method.This particular size is ideal for most households and produces a family size meal in minutes. At the end it is all dishwasher safe.

Changed our culinary life!!

WOW! have been using our Kuhn Rikon for about 5 years & can't imagine life without being able to make bean dishes anytime I want after work. Goodbye soaking, goodbye planning ahead. Hello spontaneous & speedy black-eyed peas, split pea soup & hummous from scratch.Had been scared of pressure cookers. Lived in France in high school & remember ours exploding every couple of months - spewing soup everywhere. Heard they'd "modernized" the cookers & then researched the heck out of all the ones on the market. Took the leap w/ this one because of the redundant safety features. Was terrified to try it the first time, but have never ever ever had it explode - even when I've forgotten to turn it down after it got up to pressure (thanks to the automatic safety pressure-release).And when you first taste how deeply spices penetrate curry dishes, soups and beans -- you'll be hooked. Not one ounce of regret for spending the extra $$ for this ultra-safe "BMW-quality" cooker.

Excellent pressure cooker

So, I've never used a pressure cooker (PC) and was a bit afraid. I read about the electric PC's and decided the stovetop model was better because 1) gas is cheaper than electricity 2) no circuit board to break one week out of warranty and 3) I can brown meats in this monster before sealing the top. This is the Rolls Royce of pressure cookers from everything I read so I splurged and spent the money. Over 10+ years, what does $80 mean in all honesty?Regarding the electric PC's. I read all the reviews and continually found people complaining about sealing problems, faulty buttons, the machine switching from pressure to warming mode, etc. Kuhn Ricon (KR) models have consistently received the most positive reviews, which sealed my decision. I've got enough electric appliances anyway.As for safety, there is no way this thing is going to blow up unless you are clueless and don't follow simple instructions. If the pressure builds up too much, it automatically releases some steam through the spring-valve, the top of the line technology for PC's. Further, if it gets REALLY high, the rubber gasket is designed to bow outward and allow steam to escape through the side of the lid. In all, KR has five (5) safety features to protect you. Plus, you can't open it when even the slightest pressure remains. I tried to open it early, and no matter how hard I turned the lid, it wouldn't budge. This made me feel safe.I prepared my first meal last night, lamb, and it turned out perfectly in just 12 minutes. Of course, you have to include 1) prep time (which is true no matter what method you use to cook a meal); 2) time to get to 15psi (about 5 minutes with 1/2 cup of water) and 3) natural depressurization (take it off the heat and let the pressure fall naturally) (this recipe warned against quick or even slow release) which took about 10 minutes. Still, given all this, it still was quicker than a slow cooker, range top, or regular oven (which I don't think would have worked for this recipe anyway).Once I had the ingredients prepared, I browned the veal on the bottom with a little oil, dumped in the rest of the ingredients, added 1/2 cup of water (mandatory to build up the steam) and sealed it. Sealing is EASY, just line up the arrows, twist, and you're done. Now, I know KR makes models without the long handle and replaces it with two smaller grab handles at either side (model 3403 for example), but the long handle (it has a small grab handle on the other side) provides leverage to help in closing the top. This long handle also helps lift the cooker, as it is quite heavy (this is one solid sucker to be sure) and lifting it takes some effort, especially when full of food. It takes a little extra space to store, but believe me, it's well worth it. I've got plenty of pots with small grab handles, and they always get very hot and provide no leverage for lifting or closing.This model (3916) has the Duromatic twist top vs. the pop-up type (model 3342 for example). I chose the 3916 because it is designed for people like me, who know nothing and want a little more flexibility in pressure release and pressure monitoring. It is super easy to see when one, then two, lines appear, even from across the kitchen. One line is 8 psi, two lines 15 psi, and if it goes over that, you can easily see that, too, and you know it's time to turn down the heat or remove it altogether until the two lines are exactly even with the top of the lid. Then, place it back. I'm sure with experience I'll learn exactly how low to turn my flame so I don't have to fuss with it. Until then, it's fun experimenting.It is not Teflon, which is not a big deal to me because 1) Teflon always wears off and 2) it seems to flake when suffering at the higher pressure/temps a PC thrives on. So, it's probably better that it NOT be present. Read reviews of the electric PC's and you'll read a lot of "...the Teflon flakes and is worthless..." comments. Well, as stated, that's because at the temp/pressures achieved, Teflon seems not to hold up very well.I just soaked mine overnight with soapy water and it cleaned up with a plain sponge.The instruction manual is very good, with cooking times (general), how to use, and contact information. It has a cookbook with limited recipes, so if you're in this for the long haul, I would suggest Lorna Sass' books, or Miss Vickie's, although something about her irritates me (personal opinion obviously). But strangely, MV did recommend the KR or Fagor brands, so maybe I'll learn to love her.In summary, this is a quality PC that is easy to use, that you can start cooking/browning/sautéing in (can't do that with an electric model, no matter which brand you get), and that is so safe NASA could take a lesson from KR.Is it more expensive? Yes, it is. Is my health and safety worth the extra cost? Yes, they are. When you get right down to it, KR makes the best PC in the world (not me speaking, that's the NY Times, Miss Vickie, two independent websites, and even cookware stores I called to discuss different brands). If you want a quality piece of cookware, this is it. If you want to worry about buttons breaking, plugs to trip on, warming cycles when you should be in cooking mode, then spend $100 less and get the Cuisinart 600 series (lousy customer service from personal experience). The choice is yours.Tonight it's lentil soup. Why not join me?
