WAY TOO BIG FOR HOME USE

This thing was a monster. Too big to fit into my sink or dishwasher. Really, you need to be a restaurant to want to use it. I packed it right up and sent it back losing $20.00 in the return process for restocking fee. Also, I had called BroilKing before I purchased and specifically asked them if the interior silver lining of the pot came out for easy wash. They said yes, but the only thing that came out was the steamer basket, not the interior lining. So there would be no way to dump this huge heavy steamer over to clean out the main chamber.

Mediocre quality for high price

I really wanted to love this item, but my experience with it and with Breville support was disappointing. I was attracted to the non-stick stove top useable insert. When my item arrived, I notice a bare metal defect on the inner rim with adjacent coating peeling off. Returned to Amazon with rapid replacement. The replacement also had a defect in the vessel coating and was returned for a refund. The cooker is manufactured in China, and the machining/finishing of the cooking insert is not good. The coating itself is a Teflon like material, not the newer metallic coatings (viz Scanpan). Although there are some "official" descriptions that say that metal utensils are permissible, the instruction book states clearly that only non-metallic utensils may be used. The lid of the device is thin stainless, "cheap" appearing for a product in this price range. The temperature knob has the feel of a multiposition old radio leaf switch. I measured the temperature in the vessel and did not have the overheating problems described by some. Max temp on high was 205 degrees. My largest concern was an attempt to reach Breville customer support via phone----on hold for 40 minutes before I gave up. There was no response to an email I sent to customer support. Buyer beware.

Too hot

Would love to this a five star rating but mine cooks too hot. I just cooked my third roast over 3 lbs on low and it cooked in 3 hours. It is supposed to take 6 - 10 hours per the manufacturers instructions. It looks great and being able to sear in the same pan is a big advantage in my galley but the inability to really cook things on a low temperature is disappointing. No response from the manufacturer from their help desk.

LOVE this slow cooker!

I have several Breville products and am always impressed with their high quality.I love the easy sear insert and the included roasting rack. Seared meat and vegetables have much more flavor. With this slow cooker, you are able to sear a roast in the insert over the stovepot, take the roast out to insert the rack, put the roast back in, add the rest of your ingredients, and then put the insert into the slow cooker until finished. So easy and so tasty! You can also use the insert to make dishes normally not done in a slow cooker. After cooking the dish on the stove, you can put it in the slow cooker and keep it warm. Perfect for potluck dinners. You can't go wrong with this Breville Slow Cooker!

I'm in love with the risotto feature!

I just got my cooker last weekend and have used it for 4 different types of risotto. All were perfectly cooked and the warmer gives a little breathing room between the end of cooking and serving.I also used it for plain rice. It also turned out perfectly. I like the sauté feature too. Makes 1 less pan to clean.I will probably not use it for slow cooking roasts because it is too small. I would use it for stews though.I do find the interior pot to be cheaply made, but then I am used to my ALL CLAD slow cooker that has a heavy aluminum pan.I really don't care about anything but the risotto making ability. It saves me time and produces wonderfully cooked risotto.

Easiest risotto ever

I was highly skeptical that this appliance would actually make good risotto without all the stirring that is generally required. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised. The risotto came out perfect with one single stir. And the Breville allows you to saute the onion, garlic or meat prior to making the risotto, all in the same pot. Awesome.

Very satisfied

I think this is a wonderful machine, and a great value for the price.I've used it as a slow cooker, a steamer, and a risotto maker. It's a little disconcerting not to be able to set a timer on it, but each time the results have been wonderful. The risotto is just as good as the risotto I produce on the stovetop.I disagree with the critics who say it is cheap and flimsy; I think that to make it lightweight and an efficient conductor of temperatures, it needs to be exactly what it is. Frankly, I'm delighted not to have to deal with a heavy ceramic bowl such as my larger slow cooker has.I'm glad I bought this and would recommend it.

Love this appliance!

I am not sure what happened with the other reviewer but- I love this appliance. I have used it multiple times since it's arrival-even though I am new to pressure cooking. I cook all of our meals due to living in a very remote area. And, as I was getting tired of the crockpot (using it 3 to 4 times a week), I decided to give this a whirl after a friend bought a similar product off of a shopping network and raved about it. I feel the one star review is not justified. This machine pressure cooks well and safely- I have used the pressure cooking to make pasta, roasted chicken and a beef roast as well as a steamer for steamed veggies. I plan on trying the rice pressure cooking soon. I have used it as a slow cooker for 2 dishes, with the same success I have with my regular crockpot. I look at the 6 hours a a 'high' setting and 8 as more of a low,even though there is no heat adjustment.PROS:Excellent results with pressure cookingLove that I can sear or brown ground beef in this and then not dirty yet another pan and have the mess on the stoveAlso love that you can remove the meat and reduce the sauce right in the unitIt is very VERY easy to cleanIt has a steamer basket and rack insert (to keep meat from being submerged in liquid if you want to dry roast a cut of meatFlexibility of cooking quickly (my pasta dish was done in FIVE minutes) or using a slow cooker methodTimer on pressure cooker does not start until proper pressure is reached- eliminating the worry of timingIf food is not done- simply close the lid and pressure cook a bit moreCONS:I cook apple butter and spaghetti sauce in my crock and most likely won't be able to do this in this pressure cooker.Maybe the price, but this seems to be the 'going rate' for these products.I HIGHLY recommend this appliance to busy household without hesitation!

Great for cooking beans at high altitude

We live at 8,500 ft above sea level. Beans normally take 1.5 days or more in a crock or longer on the stove and they cook uneven here, making the beans a bit toothy/hard in spots. This Breville is amazing in that it takes 15 minutes to cook thicker beans like kidneys. If you are a beginner to pressure cookers, I'm offering a tip. Remember that the 15 minutes they specify is for "pressure cooking". That means, the pressure has to reach the amount required to start cooking. Total time (minus soaking, which I do overnight) is 45 minutes to 1 hour. At first try, I thought something was wrong with our Breville's timer/count down because I set it to our kitchen timer and count down took a while to start. For higher altitude, the times allotted in the book are right on the money. No additional cooking time is necessary. I highly recommend this product but be aware that the timer doesn't start until the correct amount of pressure is reached.

Valuable Cooking Tool

This cooker has opened up new meal options for our household. The ability to determine at 5 pm that we would like to serve tacos made with fresh refried beans rather than planning that the night before is liberating! No more overnight bean-soaking! Lentils and quinoa in a couple of minutes? No problem. We are trying to avoid eating anything that comes from a can, and this machine has enabled us to completely give up canned beans. We have become addicted to a healthy, 30-min black bean soup that I make by tossing a chopped onion and a few cloves of garlic, along with a generous sprinkle of cumin, into the cooker with the beans for 25 min, then puree with a bit of Sriracha and salt/pepper to taste when it's done. Sprinkle with chopped green onion and a crumble of goat cheese, and it's gorgeous and delicious.The machine is beautiful and looks great on the counter with our other stainless appliances, which is good because we have been using it nearly daily. I'm a little bit accident-prone, and the safety features of this machine give me a very high comfort level. I have had a bit of a learning curve because I've never used a pressure cooker before, and this one cooks much faster than the standard stove-top models, so online time estimates for various foods that refer to standard pots don't apply. The process of learning how to cook in this pot has been minimal, though, and I've only screwed up one food: artichokes, which I've found cook in 3 minutes in this pot. I cooked them for 8 minutes and they turned to mush :) If you cook beans for too long, they are unaffected. For those who end up buying this cooker, I've found that lentils take 8 min, black or pinto beans 22 or so, but I usually do 25 to be safe. I typically let the machine cool and depressurize on its own, but you can release the steam through a valve if you're in a hurry.I'm so glad we made the investment in this cooker, which I expect to use for many years of healthful cooking - I love it!

Great Toaster, Decent Mini-Oven

Like just about everyone else in the free world, I grew up with a GE Toast-R-Oven. I cooked everything from toast (of course) to pizza bagels (a great discovery back in the 70s) to TV dinners and even baked fish in it. When the one I received as a gift when I bought my first house finely gave up the ghost, I replaced it with a $100 Hamilton Beach tabletop convection oven could bake a whole loaf of bread, two pies or a meatloaf. It even had a rotisserie with a spit you could impale a chicken on, though I never tested this feature. I used it for several years, and it did everything you would expect of a compact toaster oven- except make toast. The burners were just too far apart.Enter the Breville. Rather than the mechanical timer and temperature control of the Hamilton Beach (and the GE before it) this unit has fully electronic control that promises to be more accurate in both functions. It can handle (they say) a 12" pizza, and 4 slices of toast. So how does all this work in practice?As a toaster, it's great. It toasts more evenly than my $20 Target toaster, and the slide out crumb tray makes cleaning easy. Repeatability if excellent, and of course you can watch the bread/bagel/whatever as it toasts, keeping an eye out for burning. It compensates for heat buildup when you toast multiple items in sequence- a major help. Still, for close to $200 you expect more than just toast from a machine like this.I haven't tried baking a pie yet, but I did do some miniature muffins, and they came out fine. I haven't done any bread yet, as it's just too small to handle a standard loaf of the size I bake. Maybe I can make some buns or rolls in it.The timer function is a bit annoying in the way it works. You set the time and temperature, and when it comes up to temperature, it starts the countdown. This is fine for frozen pizzas and TV dinners, but less helpful for bakers trying to control the baking environment. I'd prefer something that would come up to temperature and then wait for me to start the timer.Half the functions on the main knob are for preset cooking programs- like the microwave ovens in lunchrooms that have buttons labeled "soup", "sandwich", and so forth. There's a "cookies" function, but I have dozens of different cookie recipes with different time and temperature settings. This program is useless to me.So: A great toaster, and a useful oven for baking very small items. It's a little deeper than the old Toast-R-Oven, but still not big enough to handle more than a quarter sheet of cookies or a small pie. Useful, for what it is, but given the price, it's getting close to being a luxury easy bake oven. I think the Breville BOV800XL The Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster Oven with Element IQ, which adds convection and a somewhat larger oven is a better deal overall, and if you really want a useful secondary oven, something like my Hamilton Beach 31197R Countertop Oven with Convection and Rotisserie is a lot more flexible.Followup:After a little over three months of using this oven, I'm more convinced than ever that this is a superb (if expensive) toaster. Unlike the pop-up toaster on my counter, you can precisely set the actual toasting time- very handy- and you can watch until you get the precise shade of browning you're looking for.I'm also becoming more favorably inclined to its use as an oven, too. It's still a bit small for most baking uses, but it's big enough for roasting peppers or baking a few potatoes, or even a tiny batch of cookies. I still think the larger version is a better all-around appliance, but for a tiny apartment kitchen this may be a good choice.Six month update:I find I've been using this oven more and more for all my toasting and small baking needs- it's even taking over some of the tasks I used to do in my microwave. It's still reliable, easy to maintain, and the accurate electronic timer is a great improvement over the mechanical timers in cheaper ovens in both accuracy and reliability.Update: It's now three years since I wrote this review, and I find myself using this toaster oven almost every day. I toast in it, I bake, and I broil. In hot weather it gets more use than my oven, and it still works as good as it did the day I received it.

Excellent toaster oven

It's a shame you have to spend over $150 for a good toaster oven, but if the cost is not an issue, this is an excellent one. This is not a convection oven, but is exactly what I wanted and it fits perfectly where the cheap one it replaced was.This oven is well made, the door opens smoothly, the rack comes out easily. The pan that comes with it is heavy and enameled, not cheap sheet metal. The control system is excellent. The display is illuminated while setting or cooking, but dims out when not in use. I found it very easy to use. Toasting is a single touch and it compensates for the hot oven with multiple toast cycles. I've used the bake cycle and the muffins turned out great. It remembers your last setting for each cycle, so if you determine the 'perfect' setting for your favorite bagels or pizza, it's preset and ready to start when selecting the cycle. The crumb tray pulls out the front and is very easy to clean. This is vastly superior to out the back or from the bottom that most of the others I looked at have.

Fall in love with toast all over again

I'm not one to write reviews, but this toaster is worth the time investment! We bought this toaster about a month ago. The whole family (inc. the kids) fell in love with it from the first time we ate toasted bread out of it, but we decided to hold off writing the review for "further testing". Initially, we had a Black and Decker for a bit less than 13 yrs till the toast lever caught fire (literally) and stopped functioning properly. So we needed a replacement. Our criteria was a small toaster/oven, that is not complicated to use, does not offer convection cooking (I already have two full size convection ovens), does not have the annoying ticker timer and that was about $50 - $70. I searched among many brands, unfortunately, many either were simple but offered the ticker timer OR offered convection baking which I know I would not use. The day I came across The Breville toaster and read the reviews, I was impressed with the features, but not the price. The reviews were so positive that I reconsidered the budget allotted for a toaster oven. This toaster is so easy to use, my 8 and 11 yr old can operate on their own with minimal supervision. It toasts toast, and french bread/baguette with beautifully, even golden color, crisp outside and warm chewy inside. We fell in love with toasted bread all over again! I reheated whole chicken the other day, and that came out perfectly warmed, through and through with crisped skin. We love this toaster and thank Breville for making it. I will definitely be recommending it to anyone who's looking for a good toaster oven, and it willing to make the investment. It's an investment, that's well worth every penny!

Great machine for soy milk lover

I bought this product weeks ago and use it to make soy milk every morning. It was great. You need only a little cup of dried soybeans and water and 15 min to make soy milk for 4-5 ppl! The taste is much better than the Silk soy milk which sold at Walmart, and without addtives! It is even better if you add 1 tsb. sugar in it, or maybe some cereals as well. The machine is also very easy to clean, usually takes you 1-2 min to clean up. Great product for me and my family.

Well worth the investment

My wife's cousin told us about this brand when we were shopping for a soy milk maker. Initially we were dubious since this is a Chinese brand. However, after reading some good reviews on several forums on Internet, we decide to give it a try.The package arrived quickly and in a good shape. The operation is simple. Rinse and wash the soybeans first. Then soak them in water for 5-8 hours. Put the beans in the stainless steel holder/body of the machine. Pour drinking water up to the mark on the wall of the holder/body. Put the top (with the stainless shell locked in place) on top of the holder/body. Select the operational mode. Then it starts.The whole procedure takes about 20 minutes. I think it heats up the water and boils the soybeans first. After some minutes, it grinds for about 5 second and continue to broil. After repeating this procedure twice, it makes the final grinding for about 1-2 minutes and boil till it's done.Here are some points you have to look out, though:1. You need to pour the soy milk out and rinse the holder/body and the top quickly. Don't let it stay in the holder because it would get thicken with the remaining heat of the stainless steel holder. It would make the cleaning more difficult later.2. The filter is good for filtering most of the soybean bits out. There is only this bit of taste of "powder" remaining. If you want to completely take out that taste, do a 2nd filtering with a paper coffee filter.3. Watch out about how you place the top. In my opinion, the design could use some improvements. The long shaft of the blades could be a problematic area. The top is heavy. If you put it side-way, it is very likely to tilt and put the unwanted weight on the long shaft. It might bend the shaft eventually.4. It would be a better design if the long shaft (along with the blades) can be easily detached. If so, it would cause the problem above. It would also make the repair or replacement of the blade easier. It would even make the cleaning easier. Believe me, it is not all that easy to clean the shaft and blades while holding the heavy top.5. Manual and measurement: The machine comes with a very simple English manual. Fortunately, the operation is simple enough that the simplicity of the manual does not pose a problem. However, the recipes in the manual are based on the measuring cup coming with the machine. And the cup is not a standard one. How would the users use the machine if the cup is misplaced or lost?So here is the tip: 4/5 cup of soybeans equals to 70g.Other than the above minor issues, I have no other complaint. With 70g of soybeans, we could make about 1.2 liter (5 8oz cups) of hot and fresh soy milk. We will put the machine to very frequent uses.

Great product easy to use

I have used this soy milk maker to make soy milk, rice milk, and tofu. The manual is not very informative but the machine is easy to use and with all the videos on Youtube about it, I had no problem figuring it out. It comes with enough soy beans to make 1 liter of soy milk. So do have a supply of beans on hand. Cleaning is very easy if you rise under hot water right after use. It seems to be well built and do think I will have plentyof years use from it. I will certainly be buying another one in the future for it takes 4 loads of soy milk from the machine to make a weeks worth of firm tofu. You should have a cheese cloth or a gold filter is you like your soy milk pulp free, for the strainer that comes with the machine is a primary stage strainer. It does a good job but does leave some pulp in the milk. This is a great product.

InfraWave is Much More Than a Toaster Oven

I had a toaster oven that died so I began the typical online research - trying to find the best bang for the buck.I realize that online reviews are always subjective since you cannot ascertain the true ratio of "good to bad" experiences among the entire spectrum of customers, but only among those who are moved to write about it.However, I noticed in reading reviews that experienced owners - looking to replace older infrared-assisted ovens - were disappointed to find that fewer and fewer companies offer them any longer to the consumer electronics market. Whereas on the commercial market, such as the restaurant industry, the technology has been used in larger Infrared ovens for many years.The benefits claimed by the owners in using this technology for toaster ovens prompted me to find one - if I could. I felt skeptical when I learned that "Black and Decker" was the original designer/manufacturer of the only surviving product line I found, not being a real B&D fan, myself.Some of this product line is sold bearing the B&D badge but the same models may instead wear the "Applica" name. "Applica Consumer Products" bought the enire InfraWave line, back in 1998.Anyway - after contacting Applica by email and again by phone, I was convinced of the integrity of the unit and Applica's support. So I bought the FC300 unit for my wife and also the smaller FC150 for my mother, as Christmas gifts. I remain impressed with this oven to say the least.The FC300 is larger than the FC150. After I saw the differences in size between the two units, I was glad I ordered the larger one for my wife. The smaller one is good for one person or "typical" toaster-oven duties, but if you use it for as many things as we do, the extra size is very nice.The unit comes with a video CD that lets you watch various dishes being prepared, covering all aspects of use in step-by-step fashion. It has a paper manual as well, but the video is fast, helpful, and thorough.The unit cooks faster than simple convection alone and offers automatic cooking time conversion. For example, you can input the conventional oven cooking instructions "verbatim" from the side panel of a frozen dinner, (time and temperature). If you select "convert", the InfraWave processor can automatically "shorten it" to cook via infrared as appropriate. Manual adjustment or intervention during a cooking cycle is also maintained as an option - and easily done on the fly should you require some variation in order to meet your taste.Surprises include the oven's abilities to cook foods to perfection that you might normally prefer to cook using another device. Chicken can be tender and juicy inside while browning the skin golden and crispy. Steaks can be broiled with excellent flavor and texture, (yes, I know the BBQ grill reigns supreme - but try it on a rainy day and you will be pleasantly surprised).Pre-heating is a thing of the past. You never do that anymore because this baby jumps right to work on frozen foods without delay. Frozen pizza is a no-brainer and the control panel has its own dedicated "pizza" button - as well as individual buttons for other popular foods typically cooked in an oven.You will be impressed with how this unit can just about replace your conventional oven for any foods that will fit inside it. The energy savings for using this unit as opposed to the full-sized oven are real, but even more valuable to us is the way the food is cooked faster and tastes better - even with leftovers, (which won't taste like leftovers).I believe that you can purchase one of these with confidence. Irreplaceable appliance!

I've owned 2 infrawaves: first the small one and the I got the large one with rotisserie. I absolutely love it! I cook everything in it! In fact since I remodeled my kitchen 5yrs ago the regular oven has only been used 4 or 5 times. We toast, reheat, make frozen pizza (the best you can make at home) and broil chicken, fish and meat. I've broiled frozen steaks many times and the results are simply remarkable. For cooking I mainly use "Convert": this feature let's you enter the traditional oven time and temperature as well as the type of food you are cooking, then you press Convert and voila! It gives you your new (and shorter) cooking time. Frozen pizza is cooked from top and bottom at the same time. Toast is ready incredibly fast. Everything you cook will be perfect. Get it while you can, you will never regret it.

We DID love it....

We bought this oven a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. It actually toasts much faster than others on the market these days. We used it EVERYDAY. If not for toasting for warming leftovers. We have even had company ask where we got it so they could get one.......So now 2 years later it is dead. At first the top coils stopped working then it sparked and died.At this price point 2 years is not a long time! We won't get another one but we did love it!
